FAQs
How do I join one of your practices?
Contact us through our Club boardmember email, Facebook page or this website contact page. All experience levels welcome!
What if I've never outrigger canoe'd?
No problem! We will walk you through the basics and safety procedures.
How much does it cost?
Your first paddle with us is complimentary! Once you're hooked, you can join the club at an annual membership fee. Connect with us for more on membership.
What's a practice look like?
We meet at True North Marina, the steersman will assign you a seat, and the crew will teach you what you need to know to get started. We work together to get the canoe(s) in the water and paddle about 90 minutes through Clear Lake and Galveston Bay (don't worry, we stop for breaks!). Then we get the canoe(s) back on on land, rinsed and re-racked, so be prepared for heavy lifting and a challenging workout!
What do I need to bring?
Water and weather appropriate attire, sunscreen, water in a reusable container. If you have your own life vest, bring it but we have life vests and paddles to loan you.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. Some days the water can get rough so it's important you can tread water and swim, even with a life vest on. Please review the video below before the workout.
What terminology do I need to know?
Our club is grounded in respect for Hawaiian traditions and use Hawaiian terms when we paddle, as well as typical nautical terms and commands. You'll pick up on it as we go!
